Peng Chau Island - Teaching

This Master Design Studio, developed within ongoing research on Peng Chau, explored the relationship between festival culture, tourism, and architectural intervention on the island located on the eastern side of Lantau. In a context where cultural heritage and tourism are often seen as conflicting forces, the studio examined how carefully designed infrastructures could support cultural continuity while preparing the island for future growth. Using local festivals—such as the dragon boat race—as an entry point, students investigated Peng Chau’s history, community, and craft traditions. Through site analysis, workshops, and prototypical design, teams developed adaptive waterfront infrastructures combining permanent and temporary elements, balancing environmental care, cultural identity, and architectural innovation.
